Weekly Program- 30 hours
This program is designed for new and intermediate students of Ayurveda.
It presents a continuum of learning, with one program laying a foundation
for the following week’s study. Students applying for the two-week
panchakarma practicum must attend the pre-requisite weeks.
WEEK 1: Introductory Ayurveda
Join us in learning about the fine points of philosophy according to
Ayurveda, the concept of creation and the purpose of human life. An in-depth
understanding of Vata, Pitta and Kapha ('doshas') will be presented. Amongst
other topics, we will discuss how disease and health arise according to
the ancient medical scriptures of Ayurveda, the concept of ‘dhatus’
(tissue formation), digestion, the importance of the daily routine and
right use of time, food choices and preparation for each family member,
an introductory discussion of panchakarma (cleansing and rejuvenation
measures) of Ayurveda.
WEEK 2:
Intermediate Ayurveda
We will go deeper into an understanding of food choices in Ayurveda,
including the science of the six tastes as a foundation for dietary and
herbal science. We will also discuss the thermal influences of ‘dravyas’
(substances), cellular and post-cellular digestion and their respective
influences on the emotions, and the unique properties of several useful
medicinal plants. We will discover psychology according to Ayurveda, the
five stages of the disease process (‘samprapti’), the fifteen
sub-doshas of Vata, Pitta and Kapha and much, much more.
WEEK 3:
Turiya Therapy
Turiya Therapy is applied marma (trigger point) science. We will cover
many of the anterior, posterior and cranial marmani (trigger points) and
learn a general protocol which is safe for healing deep-seated disturbances
by still-point self-realization. We will learn powerful, effective hands-on protocols
for management of Vata, Pitta and Kapha symtoms and how to help yourself and others
to introvert the attention to transcend the root causes of disease.
This popular class will provide skill and awareness of energy, breathing
and much more.
WEEK 4:
Pulse Assessment
This program is designed for those with a good foundation and knowledge
of Ayurveda. The course text is Secrets of the Pulse, by Vasant
Dattatray Lad, B.A.M.S., Ma.Sc.
We will cover the basic Prakruti (7th level) pulse assessments and Vikruti
(1st level) pulses, the Manas (mind) pulses (6th & 2nd levels), Dhatu
pulses, their disturbances and interpretations (5th level), Sub-dosha
pulses, their disturbances (3rd level) and interpretations (3rd level),
and Ojas, Tejas, Prana, (the subtle manifestations of Vata, Pitta and
Kapha (4th level). We will review and anchor the class content, discuss
how to maintain your learning curve, network and support system. The class
is designed for students to learn more in depth each summer school, as
pulse reading skill is acquired with practice.
The Panchakarma Practicum will be based around the actual treatments
of eligible patients. Students will rotate observation and hands-on participation
to fully understand the external and internal processes involved. Detailed
case studies will provide clinical supervision and practical exposure
to advanced students through discussion, feedback and question and answer
opportunities. Students and clients alike report they learn so much more
in this format about the cases, which are selected for their educational
range. This unique mentoring format provides clinical exposure with individualized
attention to detailed understanding and practice.
