Our nature is to seek safety in our environment. The nervous system is wired to react when there is a sudden physical stress and our flexor muscles engage.
So what happens when we are faced with a loud noise, a strange smell, some disturbing news ? Our nervous system quietly reacts in flexion.
What I find so fascinating is when we consciously work the extensors, it settles our nervous system. It calms the mind. As we consciously engage our extensors, the parasympathetic system is activated so when we are faced with a stressor, we can respond with grace.
